– ‘Jungle Queen’ or ‘Prissy Prince(ss)’!

Female Adaptation to the Hawaii Rain Forest

2015 Intern Tara - Rain Forest Queen!

As an eco-feminist community we emphasize that living in the jungle and learning self reliance and stoicism can be very empowering for women who realize they can do a lot for themselves without having to rely on men.

However, despite our emphasis on female empowerment and equality we noticed that many women who come from urban areas are often a little afraid of nature!

Urban females often squeal if they see a spider. Shudder if they hear a strange sound and treat the jungle like it's a teen age horror movie!

Jungle Queens in Hawaii

Ophelia, Kate & Heather: Hedonisia Jungle Queens 2015!

This page is about how our community promotes female natural and physical empowerment so we have not talked about men yet! However, we have had 'Prissy Princes'; males who couldn't handle living in the jungle! We are not being gender specific! Just describing a real issue; the fact that many urban dwellers are challenged with living harmoniously in nature.

We want to help you rediscover your inner Jane or Tarzan! Anyone can be a 'Jungle Queen' or 'King of the Jungle' rather than a complaining 'Prissy Prince(ss)'! The natural exposures you have while living in the Hawaiian rain forest will help you sharpen many skills, including some you may not even know you possess!

Complaining Prissy Princess! Empowered Jungle Queen!
  • Does not see at all the work we have already done. Only that it is not like a city hotel. And then complains accordingly!
  • Complains to anyone and everyone to make 'allies' for their 'cause' creating negativity for the entire community.
  • Did not read the website thoroughly to understand the program, community, surroundings, transport etc.
  • Instead, blames us for not being the fantasy community that they created in their head.
  • Comes to a rain forest and then complains about the rain!
  • Sees an insect or hears a jungle sound and 'freaks out'!
  • Wants everything to be exact and predictable.
  • Sees the 'big picture' and appreciates that it took a lot of work to get this community to the place it is at.
  • Finds it challenging and rewarding to 'work in the land' and is okay with a little dirt!
  • Knows that a woman can be strong and still feminine when she does not feel that she needs a man to 'scare away the spiders'!
  • Willing to work on solutions rather than just being a complainer.
  • Proud of the scratches that come from living in the rain forest!
  • Understands that living in a rain forest in a lava zone requires flexibility and adaptability and ENJOYS a little unpredictability!
  • Wants to learn and grow physically, emotionally and intellectually. Appreciates the rain forest as a great place to do so!

Even the most urban females can adapt here if they arrive with an open mind! Many Jungle Queens would agree that life begins outside of your comfort zone, and you're a lot less fragile than you think!

At Hedonisia, we believe that the best method of learning is through doing, and you get the chance to do a whole lot! You'd be surprised at how multifaceted and handy you are. Identifying your strengths is one of the most empowering things you can do.

Although we try our best to accommodate all of our visitors, it only takes one complaining prince(ss) to bring down the energy of everyone in the community.

However, it's okay to come here as a princess! Many women (and men!) have arrived at our community with the delicate sensibilities of those who have known mostly urban life. What we hope is to inspire you to be a Jungle Queen!

It is not feminist to ‘coddle’ a female with only gentle feedback. We help you with feedback as you settle into your volunteer or intern life. With our Jungle Queen approach, women are stronger when allowed the opportunity to be challenged by real jungle and honest feedback!

Hedonisia Community Jungle Queen Alumni!

These are women who for the most part, have never lived in a jungle but who adapted well to their rain forest home at Hedonisia! There are many more but to save space, we are only listing 3 Jungle Queens per year. So please don't be offended if you are not listed!
